Minehead EYE is a new build facility for youth and community enjoyment in Minehead. It is a purpose built two-storey building sited to the south of the Mart Road Regeneration Area.
Minehead EYE was conceived as an exciting building for young people. The architectural objective being to create a low carbon environmentally responsive building which the community and building users can respect and take ownership of; a facility where their opinions and thoughts are valued as important members of the community.
During the day the building stands as an elegant symbol with a transparent and layered first floor façade expressing the strengths and complexities of youth culture. At night the building comes alive through the use of subtle colour change LED lighting. The focal point and resultant entrance to the building addresses the centre of Minehead. It is marked by a glazed entrance and projecting canopy which helps symbolize its location.
The building is biomass (woodpellets) underfloor heated and heat recovery ventilated throughout. A small percentage of the building is heated with the remainder (Hall & Balcony) acting as buffer spaces.
All primary spaces designed with a 5% daylight factor. An 8KWp photovoltaic (monocrystalline) solar array has been installed on the roof (utilising FIT) which provides a large percentage of the power needed to run the building.
